The Friends of Dover Castle

is a Registered Charity and not-for-profit membership association, we currently (as of 2026) proudly comprise 188 paid-up members, many of whom play a vital role in our organisation’s mission to make a positive impact. Our governance structure is led by a Chairman and a non-executive President, a position that is currently vacant and which offers a unique opportunity for a dedicated individual to contribute their skills and expertise to our cause.

We are fortunate to have two esteemed honorary vice Presidents: Mr Mike McFarnell, who was instrumental in our association’s establishment following a meeting with the Late Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, a renowned British aristocrat and motoring enthusiast, and Mrs. Wendi Atherton, who resided in Constable’s Tower during her husband’s tenure as Deputy Constable of Dover Castle between 1976 and 1981, a period marked by great change. During this period, Her Majesty the Queen Mother was installed as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Constable of Dover Castle, frequently staying at the castle and being entertained by the Atherton family, who were known for their warm hospitality and dedication to the castle and the wider community.

We are grateful for the rich history and heritage that our association has been built upon, and we look forward to continuing to make a positive impact in the years to come.
